Review: Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara

Guerlain is a brand that impresses me over and over. Everything I've ever bought from them I've absolutely loved. When they released their new mascara 'Maxi Lash' last year I received a sample and was immediately very impressed. So much so that I decided to buy the full-size.

If you appreciate nothing about this mascara, at the very least you have to appreciate the design. It comes in a very sleek gold tube with just the Guerlain logo imprinted on the front. What sets it apart is that it is shorter than your typical mascara, so perfect for taking with you in your handbag for touch-ups on the go.

The brush has natural bristles, and there's a lot of them. They are attached in a kind of downward spiral, but there is little space between them. This lets the brush grab onto every lash. The tube is shorter, which means the wand is also shorter. This gives room for more precision and control. I find the mascara makes my lashes longer, gives volume and is really really black.

Formula-wise this fall into that perfect place between wet and dry. It's absolutely not a wet mascara, which is a plus for me as I don't personally care for wet mascaras of any kind. It's also not super dry and clumpy, or one of those that starts out great, but dries up in three weeks like Make Up For Ever's Smoky Lash.

Maxi Lash's best asset, it's star power, is it's ability to get built up with more and more layers. I can apply one coat or three, even four coats of this without it clumping up. I can also go back a few hours later to top up for more impact - perfect if you want to go out for a drink or two straight after work.

Where I have to take a point of with this mascara, is that it is heavily scented. I can smell what I think is a rose scent when applying this. Thankfully this has not caused any irritation with my eyes. My eyes are sensitive in that I'm sensitive to sunlight and cry so much cutting onions I can't see anything, but I don't have the kind of sensitive eyes where I have trouble finding mascaras that work, most don't bother my eyes. Where I might have an issue from this, is when I remove it. If I get it in my eyes when removing it, it burns. Other than that I'm fine. Do take this as a bit of a heads up though if you tend to react to mascaras, I think this one just might be one to skip.

I'm now on my third month using Maxi Lash and while it's gotten a bit drier than when it was brand new, it's still working well. I will say though that it's getting a bit less good at layering as the formula gets drier, but it's still working well with just a tiny bit more work.

All in all I love this mascara. I love the way it makes my lashes look, how they stay that way all day, and that I can layer it to suit whatever look I'm going for. I also really love the smaller sleek gold tube that fits perfectly in my little to-go makeup bag. This is the first time I've actually tried a mascara by Guerlain and I have to say I am very impressed.

  1. i have had a sample size of this forever, and i thought it was pretty nice too. alot of guerlain has that scent.. i don't think it is rose, as lancome mascaras smell like rose to me. I don't know if I would buy this, as I'm trying to use up mascaras first before i buy anymore, and perhaps by the time i've done that, there will be some other awesome mascara to try, hehe!

    1. He he I know exactly what you mean! I found my holy grail mascara a few months ago, Dior Iconic Overcurl, but am going through my stash of samples before I re-purchase.. kinda sucks lol!! Also yes, I feel like they release a new mascara constantly. By the time I get through my samples my mind will probably be far away from the Dior mascara he he! xx
